Mediumship can be distinguished as two basic types:
Mental Mediumship
Physical Mediumship
Mental mediumship involves the relating of information, through communication, via the varied aspects of thought transference, or mental telepathy. Mental telepathy is the relaying of information via thought, without using any of the five physical senses. Mental mediumship takes place within the consciousness of the medium. The results are expressed verbally and must pass through the medium's mouth. Because of its telepathic nature, mental mediumship is sometimes referred to as telepathic mediumship.
In a demonstration of mental mediumship, it is the medium who hears, sees, and feels what the spirit communicators are relating. Furthermore, it is the medium's function to relate the information, with minimum personal influence and prejudice, to the recipient of the message, also known as the sitter. The medium receives this information under various states of control.
Physical mediumship involves the manipulation and transformation of physical systems and energies. The spirit operators, in this case, are causing something to happen upon the Earth plane. What it is that actually happens varies with the style of mediumship involved, but the results can be seen and heard by others.
How can a medium do a reading over the phone, by letter or email?
Mediums work with their spirit guide who play an important role in the communication process. But each and every one of us has our own spirit guide, they protect and help us. Part of this protection is to ensure that the information given to a medium is something you yourself would be willing to divulge. It may be a deep problem, that you might not normally share with a stranger, but ultimately would like to discuss and solve. But I have never received information that I was not supposed to know, so they must be doing their job!
For a reading to take place over what we consider a great distance, say someone in America writing to someone in England, there must be a link in spirit. When I receive a letter my spirit guide is as aware of it's contents as I am. My guide then makes contact with your guide and the two converse. This begins a series of thoughts that stretch out into spirit, these thoughts are recognised by those we know and hopefully they can make contact with my guide who will help them to communicate with me or any other medium. So when we say the power of thought is powerful, it really is!
In the spirit world, all spirit people are connected, telepathically for want of a better word or description. It is a wonderful way of communicating and helps to explain how we are able to make the links we do. Individual personalities still exist in spirit, but it is this deep understanding and linking that bonds them together.
Clairvoyance is the psychic ability of being able to 'see' pictures, people, places, objects and colours sent from the spirit world. It is this particular gift that allows mediums to describe those they communicate with. This will also include symbolic images, which are visual clues from the communicating spirit person.
Clairaudience is the mediums gift of hearing spirit voices, remember though this is still an interpretation. They may for example hear a voice in one ear, but it is also possible to hear via thought. Accents, age, tone and speed are all detectable.
Clairsentience is the art of sensing and feeling the impressions of spirit, especially in cases of letting the medium know how they passed. They may send a sensation to the heart area for example, or pressure in the chest to indicate breathing problems, even joint pains can be sent. They can even include how the spirit person felt, emotions like euphoria, fear, panic or well-being can be interpreted.
Clairoma is yet another way for spirit to help us recognise them, everything from cigar smoke to smelly feet! Different smells may link a spirit person to his job when on Earth, further establishing their identity.
Trance or channel mediums work very differently to any of the above skills. The communicating spirit person uses the medium's body to speak directly with whoever is present with the medium.
Mediums will use one or more of these forms of communication in order to convey messages from the spirit world.
Physical Mediumship is not as common today as it was in Victorian times and the early twentieth century. The types of Physical phenomenon usually encountered are Transfiguration, Ectoplasm, Voice Trumpets, Materialisation and Apports. .
Physical Mediumship really took off in the mid 1800's up to the 1960's, although it is still practiced today. Physical mediumship should only be practised in properly controlled environments with the correct supervision and safeguards in place to ensure the safety of the medium.
Physical mediumship usually takes more time and patience to practice. The conditions have to be right for spirit to appear in whatever form. The energy used by spirit is a lot greater in this form of communication than with mental mediumship.
Here are some other types of physical Mediumship.
Materialisation can also occur where the spirit can be seen, and sometimes touched, by those present. This type of communication is very rare and should not be confused with ghosts or apparitions, as the spirit will use the energy built up in the room by those present to "appear".
Transfiguration: Here the face of a spirit person can be seen on formed over the mediums face. The correct use of lighting is necessary as shadows can appear making people think they have seen someone that really isn't there. The faces can be very clear at times, with the mediums face completely disappearing.
Direct Voice. This sounds very strange, but objects called trumpets are used for this type of communication, they are conical shaped objects with holes at both ends. The trumpet is placed in the centre of the circle of people present, when the atmosphere is right for spirit they will make the trumpet float in the air and use it for communication. This sounds far fetched I know, but it does happen. The sound is created from an artificial throat box formed from ectoplasm and comes from the pointed end of the trumpet.
Trance: This form of mediumship allows the spirit to control the mediums body for communication. This could mean using not only the voice box but also moving various parts of the body. There are various stages of trance from slight over shadowing to full deep trance where the medium seems to be asleep. Whilst in trance the medium will be aware of spirit around them, and will communicate all that is told to them without interaction of their own thoughts. Deep trance is obviously better for this as the medium is not aware of what is being said by the spirit to those present. The medium should be in no danger if the session is correctly overseen and controlled.
Apports. An Apport is a physical object bought through by spirit usually to the group of people sitting for communication. The objects can be almost anything from flowers, books, People do not usually sit for the purpose of bringing apports through, they just happen during a séance or closed circle if the spirit wishes to do so for what ever reason.
