Ghosts All Around Us

A half dozen scary, true tales that will test your nerves

There's nothing like a good ghost story – all the better when it's true. I receive a lot of great stories from readers, which is a pretty good indication of how relatively common ghost and haunting phenomena really are. On this and following pages are some fascinating stories that have come my way. Some are warm, positive experiences, some are benign, and others are truly scary. Be warned: they get scarier toward the end. Dim the lights, steel your nerves and start reading.

The Widow's Ghost

In the summer that I turned 11, my parents rented a large Victorian cottage. It was my favorite childhood home and I still have a warm feeling about that lovely place. The house was the family home of the old gentleman that rented the place to my parents. After his father died, his mother turned the house into a duplex by adding some doors and tearing down a wall. She lived in one side and rented the other side to another elderly widow, so we had two complete kitchens and the entire home could be closed off by shutting a few doors. My parents closed off one of the French doors leading into the living room and put a old sofa in front of it and put a TV in the room for my sister and me this became our "TV room."

One evening, my sister and I had just turned on the TV and sat in our regular spots on the sofa to enjoy a movie – Viva Las Vegas with Elvis and Ann Margaret – a favorite of ours. I always sat on the end of the sofa near the door that led into the dining room. From that seat, I had a clear view of the dining table and the large window in the dining room. I had regularly seen a shadow moving in front of the door on the dining room side, like someone had just walked by and I would just catch a glimpse of the heel of a boot or shoe the first few times it happened.

On this evening, I again saw something moving out of the corner of my eye and turned my head to look. There stood a woman. She had her dark hair pulled up on the top of her head in a bun. She was wearing a dark dress and held her hands cupped in front of her. She was just standing in the doorway looking at us. Then she seemed to notice me watching her. At first, she looked shocked, then her face relaxed and she smiled at me – one of the warmest, kindest smiles I've ever seen. It was like receiving a hug from someone that loves you!

I smiled back at her, then turned my attention back to the TV where Elvis was just starting to sing a song. That's when it hit me: the lady that smiled so sweetly was not only a stranger, but was transparent! I could see the dining room table and the window right through her. It reminded me of seeing your reflection in the glass of darkened window. I say "standing," but she really didn't have legs from the top of her thighs down. She seemed to be a swirl of smoke, but I could see her face and upper body clearly. When what I'd seen registered with me, I quickly turned my head to look again... but she was gone.

I didn't tell my parents what I saw that night until years later. Mom told me how my sister would say how a lady in a long dress would pull the blanket up over us at night. I often wonder why my sister, the original "Nervous Nelly," never said a word to me about it. Was the lady that made me feel so warm and fuzzy that night one of the elderly widows? – Brenda S.

The Spinning Spirit

A few years ago, while lying in bed at night, I woke up and saw a girl (probably about 18 years old or so) standing in front of the door looking at me. She was somewhat startled that I saw her; apparently, she didn't expect me to see her. Folder her arms, she said, "Oh, I'm just here looking for something. Go back to sleep."

I thought she was someone who came in from outside, but how could that be when all the doors and windows were locked. She was barefoot and wore a white, short-sleeved gown that went down to her ankles and had snowflake patterns on the center area. She was standing in front of my bedroom door and was probably a few feet away from me. She looked real enough. When she told me to go back to sleep, I saw her lips move, but heard the voice in my head, if that makes any sense. She had pitch black hair in a ponytail fashion and very white skin. The pupils of her eyes had a strange orange-like color.

She reminded me of someone I saw when I was nine years old (I was 21 at the time of the above encounter) after coming home from school. I went to my room I saw this girl, much older than I (probably about 18), spinning around in front of me while I was sitting on the bed. While she was spinning, some gold dust came off of her, and it gave me a feeling of contentment and happiness. I wonder if this was the same person. I wonder who she is. –

The East Village Subway Ghost

It was a cold winter night in 1994 about 3:00 a.m. and I had just left the home of my friend Carolyn in the East Village, Manhattan. I had just rounded the corner of 1st Street and Ave A and was walking quickly to catch the F train. A brisk wind had swept the streets clean of garbage and Clubers alike and was hurrying me along too. I had just passed the East Indian Deli and was walking past the parking lots of the high rises when I saw a young man approaching me.

He was staggering and really not dressed for the weather now, though earlier his attire would have been enough. I remember thinking to myself about him, "You'll not make it through this night if you continue going the direction you are, staggering like that. Why not just put a sign on your neck saying 'Mug me... Easy prey.'" To my surprise, the youth staggered toward me and stopped.

"You won't believe this," he slurred, "but I have walked all the way down from Broadway trying to bum subway fare. No one will give me even a quarter."

I looked at him and was startled by how much he looked like the ex-boyfriend of a mutual friend of Carolyn's and mine named Rob. It was just that he was at least 10 years younger, but damned near a twin of him. He apologized several times to me for being in the condition he was and said he should have known better, but he spent every dime he had on a girl and a good time, and that they both ran out at the same time. I laughed and gave him a quarter and started to walk, for it was cold.

"Great," he said. "All I need now is another dollar." I thought all he needed was a quarter by what he had said earlier and called him back and said, "Look, you need to get your ass off these cold streets. Give me back the quarter and I'll give you a token."

Wobbling, he put out his hand and I took the quarter from it and pushed the token into his palm because I was afraid he would drop it; all I had was two tokens and a quarter. "Now you need to get on the subway," I said and started to walk toward the station.

"Ok," he said, but walked the other way. I turned to call him... but he had vanished.

I walked up the block and called Carolyn to tell her what happened and that he looked like a young twin of Rob. After a long pause, she told me how when Rob was a young kid, he had been stabbed and died on a subway. He was later brought back to life in the hospital. Was it young Rob's ghost I saw? – Bplgeus

Massachusetts Haunting

I have a favorite aunt named Juvy and favorite uncle named Mick who lived in Rehoboth, Massachusetts in a very nice and quiet area. I used to love sleeping over her house because they were both young at heart and loved me and my brother and sister very much. My aunt worked first shift which was 7 a.m. until 3 p.m.; my uncle worked second shift from 3 p.m. until 11 p.m. So every time I slept over, he would leave for work at 2:15 and I would wait for my aunt to get home around 3:30.

One day, I was upstairs playing Nintendo and I heard her two doors open and slam shut. The doors were very old and heavy so we could always hear people come in and out of the house. I thought my aunt had come home early from work. I could hear her come up the stairs. After a little while of not hearing her call me, I left the TV room and walked to the top of the stairs. I yelled out, "Aunt Juvy? Are you home?" No response, so I didn't think nothing of it.

About three months later, around 9:30 p.m., my phone rang and my dad answered it. It was my aunt. My dad said she was screaming and crying. She was watching TV upstairs and heard the doors open and footsteps going up the stairs – just like I did – and thought it was my uncle coming home from work early. She told my dad that she called my uncle's work and he was still there.

I told my day that I heard the same thing one day when I was alone in the house. My aunt wanted to find out what was going on in that house because now she was getting harassed by that ghost every day. She would walk down the stairs and it would keep banging the wall right behind her head! She contacted the old owner of the house and found out that the now 27-year-old girl who lived there with her mother used to see this ghost every night in her bedroom; it would appear in the corner, just staring at her.

That was the guest room that I always used to sleep in.

The Hooded Specter

This happened to me when I was about 12 years old. My family and I lived in a very small house in Atlanta, Georgia. I slept in the living room, and right next to my room was the laundry room where my older brother slept. The laundry room had a wooden floor, ceiling and walls. The laundry room was very small, and about all it had room for was my brother's bed and a chair that he kept next to his bed. I slept on a bunk bed on the top bunk, and when I was lying in my bed, I could see inside of my brother's room.

One night, I woke up at about midnight. Everybody in the house was asleep. I remember feeling very afraid the instant that I woke up. Mind you, I know that I was NOT asleep. I looked into my brother's room, and in the darkness I thought I saw somebody sitting in the chair by his bed.

"Surely, this cannot be," I thought to myself. I tried to look at whatever this was as just a pile of cloths... like my mind was playing tricks on me. But no matter how I looked at it, all I could see was what looked like a person wearing a hood (like a cloak) staring at my brother. I kept staring at it, and I guess it knew I was looking at it, because it turned to look at me! I could not see any facial features – just evil darkness!

I promptly laid back down in my bed. I was petrified. Cold sweat dripped from my pores and I trembled uncontrollably. Then, I heard a sound... the sound of a chair scooting back across a wooden floor! "Dammit!" I thought as I heard footsteps coming toward me! (My room had carpet in it, by the way.) I heard footsteps on a wooden floor, then heard them on a carpeted floor... my floor! I pulled the covers over my head. I could feel this thing standing right next to me. I got very very cold. I was horrified! When I finally mustered the nerve to sit up and confront the thing... it was morning.

What has always bothered me is that I know this happened around 12 or 1 a.m., and when I sat up, the sun was out. I know that I wasn't dreaming. What happened during those five or six hours? – Lukas J.

The Green Ghost Under the Bed

I was four years old and living in a townhouse in Maryland at the time of the only paranormal experience I ever had. At the time, my little brother and I were sharing a bunk bed in a small room – he slept on the top bunk and I slept on the bottom. We kept most of our toys under the bed because the room was so small. So whenever I wanted to play with a toy, I'd just go and pop my head in between the wall and the bedside and take one out to play with. I loved doing this.

Late one night, when my brother and the rest of the household were fast asleep, I still found myself wide awake. No matter what I did, I just couldn't fall asleep. I remember looking out the window at the night sky and sighing because I was trying so hard to sleep. Eventually, being bored stiff, I thought, "What the heck, I'll just grab a toy from under the bed and play with it until I fall asleep."So I stuck my head under the bed... only to see what was a greenish male being – something like a green gnome – with wide-open, large, human-like eyes sitting, smiling and playing with one of the toys under my bed! I distinctly remember him being completely focused on playing with the toy, smiling and making exclamations of joy in the same way a baby or toddler does when playing with a fun toy. I remember the toy itself was making the usual sounds toys make when played with. I don't remember what he was wearing, but I'm pretty sure he was wearing something.

He was probably about 10 inches away from where my face was and he was very surprised to see me. But he wasn't scared at all. He seemed happy and very curious to see me and, throwing the toy aside, he inched himself toward me. I remember his huge smile and big eyes getting closer to me and I, of course, completely freaked out. This all happened within a matter of seconds. I specifically remember my face contorting into an expression of shock and fear and I just couldn't get my head out from under the bed fast enough.

I just stayed in bed for the rest of the night as there was no way I was getting out of that bed. I was absolutely convinced that he was going to reach out his hand from under the bed and grab me or something because I had seen him when I wasn't supposed to. But nothing happened after that. After a couple of hours of being awake and afraid, I ended up falling asleep.

The strange thing was that before and after I dunked my head under the bed, I could hear absolutely nothing – it was all perfectly still and quiet in my room. But when I was seeing him, I was aware of the noise he was making. I swear this really happened to me, and I think it only came about because I caught him completely off-guard. It was not a dream. Needless to say, I never dunked my head under the bed again after that.

The Grieving Ghost of Mary Jo

These high school drama students always suspected their theater was haunted - a fear confirmed by a Ouija board, a bizarre discovery and the shocking secret of a despondent spirit. We were absolutely idiotic, and a Ouija board is not a toy. We were, on the whole, very lucky.

Rita went to a small high school in Northern Minnesota. She and five friends - Cathy, Andi, Jess, Lizzy and Christine - were the core of the school's drama department. The program required them to do everything from building the sets to assistant directing the plays. This entitled them to special privileges, such as wandering around the school with a director's set of keys for the auditorium and related rooms. By the beginning of her senior year, this special access to the school at virtually any time of the day convinced Rita that the auditorium theater was haunted. Props went missing even more than the students' sloppy propmastering could account for. Doors unlocked themselves. As part of their routine, Rita and Cathy would unlock the front door to the theater, lock it behind them, walk to the back, unpadlock the door to the curtain booth, repadlock it, go out the back entrance and relock that door. Often they would come back 15 minutes later to find the curtain booth unpadlocked and standing ajar! "This happened so often," Rita said, "that we would all take a turn pulling on the padlock to make sure it was really locked." THE OUIJA BOARDNow, looking back on this period, I wonder what the hell I was doing. The most I can say is that at least we never did it alone.These unexplained occurrences may have had something to do with another interest the girls shared besides theater - a Ouija board. Rita, Cathy, Christine and Lizzy became so addicted to it that they conducted sessions almost daily. It was a simple homemade board. The girls would meet in the school's art room where they'd find the materials they needed: a sheet of paper on which they wrote the letters and numbers, and an empty plastic cellophane tape spool to use as a planchette. The girls would discard the set every week or so and make a new one.

Several spirits clamored to talk to the girls. It got to the point where they would barely touch the planchette and it would instantly take off so fast that their fingers could not keep up with it.

"There were several spirits that we talked to all the time," Rita said. Their favorite spirit, who called herself "Janet," was a somewhat mischievous entity who would often spell out the word VENEREAL just seconds before a bunch of jocks walked in the room. In fact, Janet's control of the board was sometimes so strong that the girls had to dismiss her from a session. Rita was sure they were truly communicating with spirits. "We were not fooling ourselves or tricking each other," she said. "The four of us in all possible combinations used the board with equal success."And Janet was not the only spirit they conjured. Several spirits clamored to talk to the girls. It got to the point where they would barely touch the planchette and it would instantly take off so fast that their fingers could not keep up with it.. THE RED ROOM I had no idea such a thing even existed.The faculty theater director was a fairly young teacher named Don. He was new to the school, but the girls took a quick liking to him, and he to them. One afternoon, Don and a few of the girls were just kicking around the theater after school hours. Don asked them if they had ever explored the dark, mysterious area high above the theater's stage. The girls were unaware that there was anything up there at all. It was an old, unused part of the theater complex - and usually off limits. Don suggested they all check it out and the girls, feeling adventurous, agreed.Rita, Andi and Cathy followed Don to a door located on the stairwell by the back door to the auditorium. Rita, for one, had never even noticed this old wooden door before. Above it were faded gilt letters that said, "Theater Property Rooms."

If they wanted to, they could have stepped across the top of the stage rigging on to the actual ceiling of the auditorium. But none of them were game for that. From the hall they could see that the ceiling was littered with ancient trash and a old, stained mattress.

The door creaked open to reveal a set of very steep, narrow steps. The group slowly made their way to the top where they found a small hallway off of which were three openings. Immediately to the left, they entered a dim room full of rotting, black velour stage curtains. No one knew how long those curtains were up there, but the nasty smell seeping out from their folds was sickening. The group pressed on.A few steps down the hall to the right, the wall simply opened up to the area directly above the stage and auditorium seating. If they wanted to, they could have stepped across the top of the stage rigging onto the actual ceiling of the auditorium. But none of them were game for that. From the hall they could see that the ceiling was littered with ancient trash and an old, stained mattress.Rita was starting to feel uncomfortable. The sickening smell of the curtains and the dizzying heights of the stage rigging made her want to head back downstairs. But there was something further down the hall that compelled them to continue.The third opening, on the left, was to another short length of hallway. At the end of it was a small room. Its walls were painted a bright fire-engine red. It was completely empty except for an old trunk that sat in the center of the room. To say the least, Don and the girls found this highly unusual - and a trifle disturbing. Rita had a curious feeling that they were trespassing - not just on school property, but on something much more personal.MARY JOMJ was very different than the other spirits; she seemed almost nervous.In the days that followed, Rita and the others did not even mention their strange adventure to Christine and Lizzy, knowing that if word leaked out, Don could get in trouble.The discovery of the red room and the weird feeling they got from it made the girls even more curious about the possibility of the theater being haunted. They decided to make another Ouija board and ask Janet about it. Rita and Cathy, with the other girls looking on, sat at the board and contacted Janet. Spelling out her message, Janet confirmed that there was a ghost in the theater and that her name was MJ.With her fingers on the planchette, Rita asked if it would be possible to speak with her. Almost immediately, a spirit identified itself as MJ through the board. The feeling that the girls got from MJ was very different than what they were used to from other spirits. There was a kind of nervousness in the way she spelled out her answers. "After a while, and with Janet's assistance, we found out that her name was Mary Jo," said Rita.Mary Jo wasn't just a nervous spirit. There was something wrong... something disconcerting about her manner, often only answering questions with the refrain, "I cry forever. Sad. Forever sad."

Rita and her friends were determined to find out. When in contact with Mary Jo, they pressed her for answers about her death - and her answers shocked and frightened them.

The girls at last had found a spirit they felt was connected to the theater. But why was the sad, despondent spirit of Mary Jo trapped in the stage area of this small high school? Rita and her friends were determined to find out. When in contact with Mary Jo, they pressed her for answers about her death - and her answers shocked and frightened them.Almost reluctantly, Mary Jo revealed that she had been raped in the school and had subsequently died of an illegal abortion. The girls began to wonder just how much more they really wanted to know. Yet they continued and asked where this horrible crime had been committed. The planchette began to move erratically, indicating that Mary Jo was becoming agitated as she tried to spell out... PR... PR... PR...PR? What could this mean? The school's pool room? The physics room? Then the realization of what it meant struck Rita like a bolt of lightning: "The prop room!" The instant the words came out of Rita's mouth, Mary Jo began to rapidly spell out: RED, RED, RED...Rita and Cathy were practically numb with fright. The significance of the red prop room was not lost on them, and they were so shaken that they finally told Christine and Lizzy about their bizarre discovery above the theater. MARY JO GETS EVEN She became an archetypal figure for me. Grieving with her and for her was like grieving for every woman victimized.From that day on, the girls talked with Mary Jo nearly every day. Rita even began to feel very attached to her, and felt that Mary Jo liked them, too. But Mary Jo wasn't as benign a spirit as they thought at first - especially to those who didn't believe in her.And virtually no one outside the girls' circle did believe in Mary Jo. Don, Jess and Andi dismissed the idea as a creation of the girls' dramatic imaginations and often playfully mocked the girls about it. "Mary Jo did not take kindly to this," Rita said. "She hated them, and called them respectively, ‘The Bearded Boy,' ‘Blondy' and ‘Bones.' She told us that she was going to get even with them, and although she promised that she would never do anything to us, began issuing warnings to ‘Beware stage left.' " At the time, the department was in the midst of a production of a Shakespearean comedy, which kept them working in the theater at least four hours a day. During rehearsal one day, Mary Jo seemed to make good on her threat. It was a scene of stage combat, and Andi inexplicably fell and injured her head. This might have been easier to dismiss as merely an accident had it not happened where Mary Jo warned it would - stage left.Despite the accident, Rita never felt an evil intent from Mary Jo. "She wasn't evil," said Rita. "She was just very, very sad and confused." Yet the spirit persisted in telling the girls that she was going to do things during the performances - that she would "make things happen." When they tried to get specifics from Mary Jo, she would fall back into her old refrain: "Sad. I cry forever."Fortunately, nothing drastic happened during the run of the show... just little things... little personal things that brought members of the cast and crew alike to tears. For example, Rita stumbled upon the biggest jock/tough guy in the class bawling in the stage wings. When she asked him what was wrong, he claimed not to know why. Soon after that, the girls retired the Ouija board. But the girls, especially Rita, could not forget Mary Jo. "If I had known more then, I would have tried to really help Mary Jo," said Rita, "to release her from that cycle of pain she was caught inside. I think it would have been possible to help her move on. It is one of my biggest regrets when I think about how Mary Jo shared her tears."

Coffee Shop Ghost

I own a coffee shop in Southern Indiana. I have a room in the back where I spend most of the week. I had just bought this place and after a few weeks I realized how strange it really was.

The first time that I noticed some strange happnings was about a week after I had opened the shop. It was getting late and I was closing the shop for the night. I heard something back in my room. I thought maybe it was just my cat playing with one of my feather pens until I heard a pop, like the sound a champagne bottle makes when the cork pops out. I inched my way toward the door and heard it again. I picked up a metal ruler on the counter and swung open the door. My cat flew between my feet and nearly scared me into a heart attack.

I stepped into the bedroom and looked around, but there seemed to be nothing out of the ordinary. I went around the corner into the bathroom and saw that my medicine cabinet was open. There was spilled peroxide all over the floor and aspirin spread all around in the sink. The shampoo bottle head had been unscrewed completely and spilled on the floor, seeping into the mat. I shut the door and searched the rest of the place, which seemed normal enough.

After I had cleaned the mess and locked up, I couldn't sleep. I kept thinking I wasn't alone.

A few days later at about 2:00 in the afternoon, the busy part of my day, I was in my room typing and heard a commotion in the front. I hurried to the door thinking we were being robbed. I opened it and there were customers lining up in front of the register covered from head to toe in coffee foam or soda. I looked over at the machines and they were spraying foam and soda everywhere! I rushed over to it and unplugged it, now sticky and wet myself. I apologized for the inconvenience and offered everyone a free breakfast for the next day. I closed for clean up and called a repair man. He said there was nothing wrong with the machine and it was running fine.

Later, after I had cleaned the mess and ate supper, I was sitting at the bar drinking milk and balancing my checkbook when I saw someone sitting in the corner at one of the tables. I stood up and said, "We are closed. How did you get in?" He didn't answer, but stood up and walked toward the bar. I reached over toward the kitchen knives (which I keep on the underside of the counter for cooking), but when I looked back, he was not solid anymore, but more of a wisp of a shadow figure. As I watched, the closer he got, the more he continued to fade. By the time he reached me, he had vanished.

Since then, my coffee shop has become a 24-hour "haunted coffee shop," where people drop by for supper, hoping to see the ghost.

While some ghosts seem to be lost and confused in their altered state of existence, others - like this one - seem to be watching us, and perhaps even destined to deliver an important message.

Dee A. lives with her family in Texas, renting an old house for the past four years. She had never had a problem with the ghost that she felt lived there... until April, 2002. From that time, her relationship with the spirit that has become known as "The Pink Lady" would be a mixture dread, bewilderment and thankfulness. Here is Dee's own story of this unrelenting ghost and the effect it has had on her family.

It was Easter Sunday and members of my extended family were over for the annual dinner and egg hunt. All the kids were in the backyard jumping on the trampoline while the adults sat around out front talking and catching up. My husband, who is considerably older than I (I am 26, he is 59) went into the back to check on the kids. For some reason, he decided to get up on the trampoline with them. His reflexes not being what they used to be, my husband fell off of the trampoline, crushed his ankle and was knocked unconscious.

While all of this was going on in the backyard, I was in the front talking with my cousin. Suddenly, something out of the corner of my eye caught my attention. I turned and saw this lady whom I didn't recognize standing at the edge of my yard. She was dressed in a very nice (yet quite simple) pink sundress with matching pink shoes and a pink handbag. I knew no one in our neighborhood who looked like her and couldn't imagine who would just walk up into my yard like that.

As I looked at her she said, "He needs you - NOW!"

I was mortified! I told my cousin I had to go check on the kids. As I rounded the corner to the back, my son was running to me to tell me about his dad. We called 911 and he was rushed to the emergency room. He spent three days in the hospital, and for those three days the Pink Lady never seemed to leave my side. She was right there everywhere I went - when I was home with the kids and when I was at the hospital with my husband. I saw her several times. She seemed to be watching my every move.

A Change in Temperament

The day my husband came home from the hospital, he was very weak from the pain killers they had given him, so I had to help him up the front stairs, into the house and into bed. I eventually got him settled, and when I turned to get his drinking glass, there stood the Pink Lady. But this time her demeanor was quite different. Over the three days I had seen her when my husband was in the hospital, she seemed just to be watching and thinking. But now she looked angry!

I quickly walked out of the bedroom, and when I turned to close the door, there she stood in the doorway. I left the door open, never considering I could ask her to move. For one thing, I seemed to be the only one who could see this apparition, and my husband would have thought I was crazy for talking to the doorway. Second, who knows what the spirit's reaction would have been?

I tried to put her out of my mind and went to the kitchen to start preparing dinner for the kids. But the Pink Lady wasn't going to let me off that easily. I had always known there was a ghost in my house... I had felt the presence and just knew. But now to have her there... watching me and letting me see her watching me was very unnerving! Finally, I couldn't take it anymore. I turned and said, "What do you want?"

The Message

She didn't answer, but just vanished. Apparently, the Pink Lady decided this was not the time for a confrontation. That was fine with me, and so the kids and I had our dinner.

I was about to clear the table before going in to check on my husband when she appeared again. I was standing there in my kitchen with an armful of dirty dishes, and this spirit glared at me with a look of total disgust on her face. "Should he come last behind EVERYTHING else?" she said.

was so horrified at this admonishment that I dropped the dishes. I ran into my bedroom where I found my husband trying to reach for his pain pills. He had apparently been lying in the bed in severe pain, but because he knew I was cooking for the kids, he did not holler out for me.

That was when I realized what the Pink Lady had been doing. She had showed herself to me in an attempt to make me see the obvious. I was neglecting the most important things to take care of the most mundane.

But who was this spirit?

I have since discovered from my landlord that his mother had lived in this house for nearly 50 years before she died. Her favorite color was pink and she loved to wear sundresses. I asked to see a picture of his mother, and he showed me the only picture that had not been lost when his own home burned down. The picture was black and white, but my landlord provided details of colors. His mother was standing on what was now OUR front porch in a pretty pink sundress, pink shoes with a pink handbag - just as I had seen her. Furthermore, the photo was taken on Easter Sunday, 1940.

I may be wrong, but it seems to me that the Pink Lady was enjoying our family gathering right along with us, and when my husband got injured, it disrupted our celebration as well as hers. Then, I guess, she didn't think I was taking good enough care of my patient, so she stuck around.

Once I realized that I had to pay closer attention to my husband's needs while he was out of commission, she stopped hounding me. I have not seen her since that day she admonished me, but I still feel her presence. She's no longer intrusive... but the Pink Lady is still there.

A history of blood, occult practices, possession and terrifying spirits.....

AN UNASSUMING yet historic building on the banks of the Licking River in Wilder, Kentucky has become a nationally famous story because of the tragic, strange and paranormal occurrences that have taken place there over the years. The "haunted house" currently is home to Bobby Mackey's Music World, a local country music hot spot that is owned by the club's featured performer, Bobby Mackey.

Author Douglas Hensley wrote a popular book on the subject – Hell's Gate: Terror at Bobby Mackey's Music World. Hensley spent five years researching the bizarre background of the nightclub and the building itself, which has a sordid history that dates back to the 1800s. In the back of the book are copies of 29 sworn and signed affidavits from club employees, patrons, Wilder Policemen and others, including Bobby Mackey's wife, Janet Mackey, who writes in her affidavit that an unseen force threw her down a flight of stairs and tried to harm her in other ways.

Hensley summed up his observations in the book's introduction: "The phenomena within and about Bobby Mackey's Music World have yet to be satisfactorily defined by any explanation other than: it's haunted."

BLOODY HISTORY

The old building that now houses Bobby Mackey's was a slaughterhouse for over 40 years during the 1800s. The ample spilled blood from the slaughterhouse and its location on the banks of the Licking River – one of two rivers in the world that flow north – attracted a hoard of satanic worshippers who used the site for sacrificial grounds.

In 1896, the building became entangled in a sensational and grizzly murder when Pearl Bryan's headless body was found nearby. The young lady's head was never found, but speculation abounded that it was likely disposed of in the slaughterhouse's basement well that was used to drain blood into the river when two local men who were active in the occult confessed to the murder. Alonzo Walling and Scott Jackson became the last two people hanged in Campbell County when they were sent to the gallows on March 21, 1897 for the murder of Pearl Bryan. With his last words on the gallows behind the Campbell County Courthouse – located near the slaughterhouse – Walling vowed to return to torment his executioners.

According to the Kentucky Post articles at the time, Walling and Jackson were offered life in prison instead of death if they told authorities where Bryan's head was located. People familiar with the two murderers claim that they refused because they were terrified they would spark the wrath of Satan if they exposed the site of his sacrificial grounds. Reportedly, they offered Bryan's head as a sacrifice to Satan, most likely in the slaughterhouse well. Local believers claim the well is a "gateway to hell" of sorts, a gruesome legend that lives on to the present day.

GHOSTS, HEADLESS AND OTHERWISE

Bryan (often a headless figure), Walling and Jackson reportedly have been seen on numerous occasions at Bobby Mackey's over the years, along with other spirits whose lives were entangled with the building in some way. In fact, several people have died unnatural deaths inside the building, which was alleged to be the site of several murders at the casino. During the 1950s, it became the Latin Quarter, another popular nightclub whose owners were arrested several times on gambling charges.

Later, the building became yet another rough-and-tumble nightclub, The Hard Rock Cafe (no relation to the restaurant chain), which was closed in 1978 by police request after several fatal shootings on the premises. Bobby Mackey purchased the building in 1978 and opened his Music World shortly thereafter.

One of the most frequently seen spirits is a young girl named Johana, a cabaret dancer during the club's casino days, who reportedly poisoned herself and her mobster father inside the building after he murdered her boyfriend, club singer Robert Randall. Other spirits who have appeared at the club regularly are Johana and gangster Albert "Red" Masterson.

According to sworn affidavits, other witnesses and local legend, paranormal activity in the club is often preceded by the strong smell of rose perfume. The juke box at Bobby Mackey's also has come on suddenly and played old tunes from the 1930s and 1940s – songs that were not loaded into the juke box! "The Anniversary Waltz" is a particular favorite, heard numerous times by many people. Chairs have moved inexplicably, rooms have gone cold and people have heard their names called, only to turn around and have no one there in the club.

CASES OF POSSESSION

Perhaps the most bizarre aspect of the Bobby Mackey's saga are the claims by several people that they have had spirits enter their bodies while in the club. Some of the sworn affidavits claim they felt cold chills run through their bodies, while others claimed to have taken on different personalities and even facial features while inside.

The most celebrated case of possession at Bobby Mackey's is Carl Lawson, who lived upstairs above the nightclub as a caretaker for the club. Lawson, one of the main subjects of Hensley's book, claims to have been attacked by several of the resident spirits and actually possessed by some of them as well, including Alonzo Walling. A supposedly successful exorcism of Lawson and the entire building took place at Bobby Mackey's on August 8, 1991. It was performed by the Reverend Glenn Coe and witnessed by Hensley, who also recorded it all on videotape.

For a time, it appeared that the exorcism was successful, but in recent years, strange occurrences have begun once again at the old building. Bobby Mackey, who has refused to believe the paranormal activity was true from the beginning, nevertheless made plans to tear down the building and construct a new club on adjacent property after viewing the videotape of the Carl Lawson exorcism. However, a piece of the ceiling fell on him one day when he was discussing the demolition, and the adjacent property he purchased for the new club was rendered useless by the sudden appearance of a fissure about six inches wide and 60 feet deep that runs from the old slaughterhouse well to the middle of the adjacent property.

Mackey has never built the new club, and he continues to operate at his original club where he regularly performs a special song he wrote, "The Ballad of Johana."

Nicholas Cage - This Oscar-winning actor (Leaving Las Vegas) refused to stay in uncle Francis Ford Coppola's home after seeing a ghost in the attic. (Cage was also cast as Superman in director Tim Burton's film project, which was never made.)
Keanu Reeves - The star of The Matrix films and Devil's Advocate was just a kid in New Jersey when he saw a ghost that took the form of a white double-breasted suit come into his room one night. He wasn't imagining it; his nanny saw the phantom, too.
Neve Campbell - She's been in more than her share of paranormal-themed movies (The Craft, Scream), but she's had real-life encounters as well. A woman was murdered in the house she now lives in, and friends have seen her ghost walking around.
Matthew McConaughey - This popular actor (Contact) says he freaked out the first time he saw the ghost of an old woman, whom he calls "Madame Blue," floating around his house.
Tim Robbins - Robbins, who was nominated for an Oscar in Mystic River, didn't see ghosts, but strongly felt their presence when he moved into an apartment in 1984. Following his instinct, he moved out the next day.
Hugh Grant - British romantic comedy lead Hugh Grant (Love Actually) says he and friends have heard the wailing and screaming of some tormented spirit in his Los Angeles home. He even speculates it might be the ghost of a former resident - Bette Davis.
Dan Aykroyd - The Ghostbusters star (and Oscar-nominated for Driving Miss Daisy) has long had a fascination with the paranormal. He believes his home, once owned by Cass Elliot of The Mamas and The Papas, is haunted. "A ghost certainly haunts my house," he said. "It once even crawled into bed with me. The ghost also turns on the Stairmaster and moves jewelry across the dresser. I'm sure it's Mama Cass because you get the feeling it's a big ghost."
Sting - Rock star Sting (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) and his wife Trudie have seen ghosts in their home. "I was absolutely terrified," he said. "I now believe those things are out there, but I have no explanation for them."
Jean Claude Van Damme - The Belgian action star (Timecop), also known as "Muscles from Brussels," swears he saw a ghost in his bathroom mirror while he was brushing his teeth.
Richard Dreyfuss - He won an Oscar for The Goodbye Girl, but at one time had a cocaine problem. Visions of a ghost, he said, helped him kick the habit. "I had a car crash in the late 1970s," Dreyfuss said, "when I was really screwed up, and I started seeing these ghostly visions of a little girl every night. I couldn't shake this image. Every day it became clearer and I didn't know who the hell she was. Then I realized that kid was either the child I didn't kill the night I smashed up my car, or it was the daughter that I didn't have yet. I immediately sobered up."
Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman - This Hollywood couple was forced to flee their "dream home" in Sneden's Landing, N.Y. when it became all too apparent that it was haunted. They still are reluctant to talk about their frightening encounters.
Belinda Carlisle - This pop singer and founding member of The Go-Gos, who appeared in Swing Shift and She's Having a Baby, says she saw a "misty shape" hovering over her as she lay in bed one night. She also says that when she was 17, while nodding off to sleep in a chair in her parents' home, she levitated and had an out-of-body experience.
Elke Sommers - This German-born actress, who appeared in the 1966 film The Oscar, claims to have seen the ghost of a middle-aged man in a white shirt in her home in North Beverly Hills. Guests in her home have also seen the specter. So much paranormal activity was reported in the house that the American Society for Psychical Research was brought in, and which verified the unexplained events. The severely haunted house was bought and sold more than 17 times since Sommers vacated it, and many have reported ghostly phenomena.
Paul McCartney - Ex-Beatle and Oscar-nominated songwriter ("Live and Let Die") says that he, George Harrison and Ringo Starr sensed the playful spirit of John Lennon when they were recording Lennon's song, "Free As A Bird" in 1995. "There were a lot of strange goings-on in the studio - noises that shouldn't have been there and equipment doing all manner of weird things. There was just an overall feeling that John was around."

APPARENTLY, SOME MOVIE STARS didn't get enough attention from press and fans while they were alive. Their ghosts keep showing up, perhaps for one last performance. Hollywood is full of glamour, ambition, craziness, sordid tales - even talent. And while ghosts and other tales of the paranormal have always been great movie material, Tinseltown also has its own real-life ghost stories. The envelope please.

Marilyn Monroe

The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel on Hollywood Boulevard is said to be the current residence of several ghosts of popular film stars. Marilyn Monroe, the glamorous and funny star of such pictures as Some Like It Hot and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, was a frequent guest of the Roosevelt at the height of her popularity. And although she died in her Brentwood home, her image has been seen on several occasions in a full-length mirror that once hung in her poolside suite. The mirror has been relocated to the hotel's lower level by the elevators.

Marilyn Monroe's beauty and talent made her a big star and a bona fide Hollywood icon, delighting audiences in such films as Some Like It Hot and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. She died by apparent suicide in 1962 at the age of 36.

Montgomery Clift

Another respected star who died before his time, Montgomery Clift, was a four-time Oscar nominated actor who is best known for his roles in A Place in the Sun, From Here to Eternity and Judgment at Nuremberg. He died in July, 1966 of a heart attack in his New York City townhouse.

Ghost: Clift's ghost also has been seen at the Roosevelt Hotel. According to some of the hotel's staff, Clift's spirit haunts room number 928. Clift stayed in that suite in 1953, pacing back and forth, memorizing his lines for From Here to Eternity. Loud, unexplained noises have been heard coming from the empty suite, and its phone is occasionally found mysteriously off the hook. Some guests have reportedly felt a ghostly hand touching their shoulders.

Perhaps it's fitting that the Hollywood Roosevelt should be the stirring place of celebrity ghosts since it was the site of the very first Academy Awards ceremony in 1929. In fact, the Blossom Ballroom, where the ceremony was held, has an unexplained cold spot - a circular area measuring 30 inches in diameter that remains about 10 degrees colder than the rest of the room.

Harry Houdini

Harry Houdini is best known as a magician and escape artist, of course, but at the height of his fame he was also drawn to Hollywood, where he made a handful of silent films from 1919 to 1923. He died on Halloween night, 1926 at the age of 52 of a ruptured appendix.

Ghost: Houdini's interest in the occult was well known. Shortly before his death, he made a pact with his wife Bess that if he could, he would make contact with her from the other side. Some claim to have seen the ghost of Houdini walking around in the home he owned on Laurel Canyon Blvd. in the Hollywood Hills. Every Halloween, seances are conducted to try to contact the spirit of Houdini, and several claim to have received messages from him, although they cannot be confirmed.

George Reeves

From 1953 to 1957, George Reeves was TV's Superman. Reeves had been around Hollywood for a while, playing bit parts in such films as Gone with the Wind and dozens of B-movies, but it was The Adventures of Superman on TV that brought him fame. Reeves died of a gunshot at his home in 1959. The official cause of death was suicide, but that conclusion has been hotly disputed, with some believing that Reeves was murdered. Ghost: Whether it was suicide or murder, Reeves' ghost has been seen in his former Beverly Hills home. A couple claims to have seen the ghost of Reeves - decked out in his Superman costume - materialize in the bedroom where he died, after which it slowly faded away. Comedian Jeff DeHart also says has seen his ghost.

Clifton Webb

Clifton Webb was a very popular star of the 1940s and '50s, earning two Oscar nominations for his roles in Laura and The Razor's Edge. He may be best known for his portrayal of Mr. Belvedere in a series of films. It's not too often that a ghost haunts the place in which the person is buried, but this seems to be the case for Webb. His ghost has been seen at the Abbey of the Psalms, Hollywood Memorial Cemetery, where his body is interred. But it seems to be a restless spirit, as his ghost has also been encountered at his old home on Rexford Drive in Beverly Hills.

Thelma Todd

Thelma Todd was a hot young star in the 1930s. She was featured in a number of hit comedies with the likes of The Marx Brothers, Laurel and Hardy, and Buster Keaton. But that all ended in 1935 when Todd was found dead in her car, which was parked above the café she owned on the Pacific Coast Highway. Strangely, her death was ruled an accidental suicide, but many suspected murder and a coverup by powerful Hollywood figures. The building that once housed the café is now owed by Paulist Productions, and employees have reportedly witnessed the starlet's ghost descending the stairs.

Thomas Ince

Ince is considered one of the visionary pioneers of American movies. He was one of the most respected directors of the silent era, best known, perhaps, for his westerns starring William S. Hart. He partnered with other early Hollywood giants such as D.W. Griffith and Mack Sennett, and founded Culver Studios, which later became MGM. Ironically, Ince's death overshadowed his film legacy. He died aboard William Randolph Hearst's yacht in 1924, and although the official record shows the cause of death as heart failure, the hot rumor is that he was shot by Hearst in a fit a jealousy over Hearst's wife, Marion Davies. Ince's ghost - as well as several other ghostly figures - have been seen in the lot that was once Culver Studios. Film crew members have seen the specter of a man matching Ince's description on several occasions; in one instance, when the workers tried to speak to the spirit, it turned and disappeared through a wall.

Ozzie Nelson

Ghosts and hauntings are the last thing that come to mind when you think of the perpetually cheerful Ozzie and Harriet Nelson. The couple, with their real-life sons Ricky and David, were stars of the long-running sitcom "Ozzie and Harriet," noted for its good-natured, gentle humor. Yet poor Ozzie doesn't seem to be as contented in the afterlife. Family members, it is said, have seen Ozzie's ghost in the family's old Hollywood home, and it always appears to be in a somber mood. Perhaps he's unhappy about how another Ozzy and his family have gained notoriety on TV.

Jean Harlow - The spirit of this blonde bombshell is said to haunt the bedroom of her home on North Palm Drive, where her husband allegedly used to beat her.

Learn how to spirit rescue earthbound spirits.
About a third of the United States population believes in the existence of ghosts. This could be because many are hopeful that their lives will indeed continue on after death. Yet, there are those who believe in ghosts because they have had a personal paranormal experience that has confirmed for them that ghosts do in fact exist. Many ask themselves, “What happens when we die?” None of us want to see our earthly existence come to an end, so we curiously explore the various ideas and ghost theories found within our own specific society. For years, we decided to explore the historical,

religious and spiritual beliefs regarding ghosts and spirits by examining the evidence we could collect from around the world that could possibly give us insight into ghosts and spirits.

This task has been easy to do given the rise of the Internet, and the ever-increasing rise in computer video and audio technologies. Contrast this with the keen interest the public evidenced by popular television programs and movies, and we found ourselves possessing quite a bit of evidence from which to work with. Over the past five years, we were able to collect and post ghost stories, angel stories, ghost videos, ghost pictures, angel pictures and the like – all potential evidence of the existence of spirits. For us, it wasn’t about proving ghosts exist, but more an attempt to try and discern what is happening in the spirit realm. In that spirit (pun intended), we worked to then try and communicate with ghosts and spirits utilizing EVP and the ghost box. This has allowed us to give some results with what we believe is happening on the other side of death – call it the spirit realm.

Working with the ghost box has enabled easier two-way communication with both ghosts and spirits, giving us some interesting understanding as to what is occurring on the other side of the grave. Many of the messages we have recorded from ghosts are what we call “help messages,” and often are just numerous “help me” pleas. Amazingly, it seems spirits (those who come from the light) are cleansed spirits who are benevolent and devoted to helping those who are lost and hurting. Often, recordings would reveal spirits telling ghosts to “speak up” when communicating with us, ever encouraging them to listen to us and go to the light. We have recorded these benevolent spirits giving us confirmation that ghosts we were working with did indeed cross over to the light, as well. If the ghosts listen, they can easily be helped. Having someone on the other side with the ghost always seems to assist in the spirit rescue.

Ghosts: Lost People
Our description of ghosts does sometimes vary from others it seems (see Ghost Theories), as we see ghosts as being lost and hurting people – earthbound spirits who are in need of our help. For the purpose of understanding spirit rescue, ghosts are disembodied human spirits; people who have elected to remain with those of us living, having refused to head to the light upon the death of their physical bodies. When we say “light,” we are describing the tunnel of light experience described within the majority of near death experiences. From that perspective, ghosts are spirits, but spirits that have chosen to remain earthbound; some willingly, while others unwittingly. We have found that ghosts are hurting, disincarnate people, who need help in transitioning from this realm to the next. Why do ghosts remain here with those of us in bodies? Most choose to stay here, reluctant to progress in their life journey, due to fear. The reasons why a person becomes a “ghost” of a person by hiding among the living can vary quite a bit, but all reasons for remaining earthbound are rooted in fear. It is fear that causes emotional turmoil, mistaken thinking, and at times, desperation for relief. Not all ghosts are nice, but most are not negative, either. No matter what personality a ghost may manifest, the root cause of the person’s mistaken thinking will always be found to be fear; for fear is based upon past experience, and being false, always appears to be truth. Spirit rescue means to help the ghost identify the fear so the person communicating with the lost person can help undo the mistaken thinking. In doing so, the earthbound spirit can begin to understand their condition and what must be done to be freed from this fallen mindset. Consequently, helping ghosts so they move on unto the light can be difficult and requires patience. It needs to be equated with counseling, similar to speaking with a psychiatrist, perhaps. Sometimes people will be irrational, as fear drives them to anger, hatred, and emotional traumas of all sorts, including feelings of guilt, depression, anxiety, doubt and worry. We learned that asking for help from benevolent spirits (call them angels, spirit guides, family, etc) really strengthens the effectiveness of the process. Often, ghosts are longing to be with family members who have already passed, and just the mentioning of say a deceased parent, sibling, or grandparent seems to break some of the fear that holds the lost spirit captive. We tried to approach spirit rescue from the perspective that people who have died and remain behind most likely have similar wants and desires as those of us in bodies, with only personalities of the people varying. Of course intellects will vary, as well as strength of emotions from person to person. Learning to find the humanity within the hurting person on the other side is what helps to free the hurting spirit, a stark contrast to fearing ghosts as being evil or demonic (as taught by the uneducated and often religious). Before I describe the steps I use during spirit rescue, I must explain that working with someone sensitive to spirit, or developing one’s own spiritual sensitivity is necessary in working towards freeing spirits. Practice hearing answers to questions within your being by first learning to quiet the mind. This is best practiced through meditation. If you are able to practice and work with a ghost box, this can also help provide another tool in your tool belt to assist spirits. Some spirit rescues are done by people adept at working with ghost boxes solely. Whatever the method, the results will be the same if fear is being removed and the ghost is set free and unto the light.

Spirit Rescue: How to Rescue Spirits
As mentioned previously, the most effective way to help ghosts is not to command them to go to the light, but to reason with them concerning why they have chosen to remain here, while educating them as to where they should be. The following spirit rescue walk-through is to be used by those who have developed their own personal connection with the spirit realm, or in conjunction with a talented medium: First, I think it best to make sure a ghost is aware that their body has died, but yet they are still alive and alright. I like to do this, as some ghosts seem to be panicked not knowing what is going on. Comprehending the death of our own body is important as well as understanding that our spirit lives on and is incorruptible. Acknowledge that you know the ghost is there and that you are trying to hear the lost spirit and of course help their situation. Many times ghosts just want to be acknowledged as it proves to them that they are still alive and well, and not hallucinating or dreaming. You may at times be surprised to find that while you are explaining such things to earthbound spirits in order to try and help them, other spirits from the light will also be communicating with them as well. It’s sort of like a tag team-type effort from both sides! Secondly, explain that the light is where the lost ghost should be and not here on Earth. I describe the light as the place some call heaven – where intense love, joy and peace will be felt. The light should be known to be a place where all pain goes away, no punishment exists, and the life-journey will continue. Remaining behind has stopped their life-journey from moving forward, as the lost spirit is effectively “stuck” in the past by the power of the mind. If communicating with the ghost of a child, try describing the light as a fun place to be. With all ghosts, try and understand the reason behind the spirit remaining here, seeking to understand their frame of mind and assisting them to resolve issues. Is there unfinished business? Is there a message that needs to be shared with the living from the deceased? Is there fear of punishment or something else that keeps them from going to the light? Confronting the past and helping to vanquish fears (which may just be expressed as concerns, doubts, worries, anger, etc) is what sets people free. Assure the lost spirit that they may of course return and visit earthly loved ones from time to time. Lastly, once you reach a point where the spirit is ready to move beyond this realm and unto the next, it is time to make the transition as easy as possible. I try and let them know that the spirits with me currently are there to help guide them and mean them no harm. Further explain to the lost soul that their loved ones are right there with them also, as it seems to help the transition and set the expectation. This is not an untruth, as loved ones will be there and most likely already are with the lost spirit. We have found that often loved ones in spirit try to reach those whom are trapped here, but many times are unsuccessful. The ghost may or may not be aware of their presence. Still, make them aware of their loved ones by asking the ghost to concentrate on family or friends who passed before them; doing so with the expectancy of those loved ones hearing them and reuniting with them. This process seems essential in removing the fear of moving further into the light alone. At this point I like to have them imagine that they are closing their eyes, and as they do so, I tell them a small light appears behind them. As they continue to think about their loved ones, I tell them that light is growing larger and warmer behind them– nothing to fear, but something that feels inviting and full of love. Now I ask the ghost to imagine that same light wrapping them in warmth, a blanket of love, peace and joy; telling them their loved ones are in that light, as well. I then ask the ghost to keep their eyes closed and turn around reaching out to their loved ones. Upon doing so, I ask that they open their eyes and they will see their loved one(s) holding their hands. Then tell the ghost to proceed further into the light with loved ones and in peace. The Spirited Conclusion:
Ghosts and spirits are around us all. Even though spirits exist on another plane, they choose to interact with the living for either our help (ghosts), or to help us (spirits from the light, such as angels, spirit guides, etc). Both interact with all of us more than most comprehend and are not limited to living in what we may deem as haunted locations. Ghosts and spirits have no boundaries with respect to where they must be, or who they may visit. All of us are one with each other, whether with a body or without.
